Listen to the Purple Inspiration Podcast

Everyone’s talking about “AI”, but are America’s small businesses actually using it?

This week, on a call with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) California Leadership Council, we got a preview of the latest NFIB technology survey. Later this month, I will join NFIB leaders in Sacramento to hash out policy priorities with legislators—tech policy & regulation is on the table.

The Big Picture

Small business success depends on more than grit and a good idea. It’s about adopting the right tools. The survey shows 57% of small business owners have upgraded or added significant new technology in the past two years. That’s good news for those looking to increase productivity and competitiveness. The bad news is that the other 43% have not.

The Digital Basics

Here’s a bit of a surprise: 82% of small businesses have a website… meaning 18% don’t. In 2025. Most of those without a site are “mom and pop” service shops that rely on word-of-mouth in their local communities. Still, in today’s digital-first economy, that’s a risky bet.

AI Familiarity

Artificial Intelligence? For many, it’s still uncharted territory.

  • 42% of small business owners say they’re not at all familiar with AI.

  • Among those using AI, the biggest roles are in communications, marketing/advertising, and business analysis.

Is AI Taking Your Job?

  • 98% of AI adopters report no change in staffing levels so far—but as new tech evolves, that could shift quickly, costing jobs probably for people who don’t even realize that it’s their job on the chopping block.

Small businesses have always been engines of innovation and make up about 43% of the U.S. GDP, employing about 46% of America’s private sector workforce. If these businesses and their employees don’t adapt to new trends, including AI, we’re likely to see a decline in those businesses that fuel the heart of America.
